Skills API¶
The five skills tools are not listed as functions here
list_skills, load_skill, load_skill_resource, execute_skill_script and create_skill are
registered inside _register_skills_tools(), which both skills_server and
make_skills_server() call, so they are not module-level functions that mkdocstrings can
document. Their parameters and behaviour are on the Skills server
page, and the Tool Reference will carry their exact descriptions.
Skills Server¶
doc_processing_std_tools.skills
¶
Skills tools MCP server.
Provides cross-provider Agent Skills capability, extending the SKILL.md standard (https://agentskills.io/specification) to work with any provider supported by doc-processing-toolkit.
Skills are loaded from the directory configured via DPTTOOLS_SKILLS_DIR (default: ./.agent_skills).
Frontmatter parsing uses PyYAML and supports the full set of spec fields
(name, description, license, compatibility, metadata). The optional
allowed-tools field is intentionally not surfaced because our stack
does not implement per-skill tool gating.
The module-level skills_server always registers all 5 tools at import,
preserving mid-session skill pickup. Use make_skills_server() if you
want a server that returns None when the skills directory is empty
(opt-in for static deployments).
make_skills_server()
¶
Build a skills server only if DPTTOOLS_SKILLS_DIR has at least one skill.
Use this when you do not need mid-session skill pickup and want to
avoid advertising any skills tools to the LLM when no skills are
configured. Returns None if:
DPTTOOLS_SKILLS_DIRdoes not exist, or- the directory contains no subdirectory with a SKILL.md file.
Otherwise returns a fresh FastMCP("skills-tools") with all 5 tools
registered.
For most deployments, prefer the module-level skills_server import
— it preserves mid-session skill pickup (skills added between agent
runs are discovered automatically). The token cost of the four
activation tools when the directory is empty is gated on the
doc-processing-toolkit side via its skills auto-injection logic.
